For any history buffs, Apple Island, officially known as Marjorie Ward Strong Woodland Sanctuary, is a 37-acre island formed during the recession of the region’s last ice-age glacier. The island is in the center of Orchard Lake and has been recognized as a historic site by the National Parks Service since 1998. Tours of Apple Island occur annually during the 2nd weekend in June, however, group tours are also available to book in advance.
